Historic Benton Avenue Cemetery, Helena

During an intermission at a club volleyball event being held today at Carroll College (a youth level tourney our daughter was attending), I stepped across Benton to visit the historic protestant cemetery and some resident mule deer. The cemetery has been well maintained and offers numerous pioneer era markers. Other than the enlivening blast from one BN train coming through a nearby intersection, the grounds were quite serene. I found myself wondering about the histories of the individuals buried in the various plots. What had they endured in the late 1800s? Why had these individuals chosen to move to the Montana Territory? Graveyards are fascinating places.  Life is fleeting.
